SKATE LIKE A LASS

Really excited to be leading some photography workshops at the @nationalportraitgallery — both for adults and as part of their schools programme — alongside the opening of this year’s Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize on November 13, where I’m honoured to be a finalist.

As a self-taught photographer, I love to focus on ways of seeing and play first (the technical side comes second!) My love of portraiture grew out of painting portraits and becoming fascinated by how a single image can hold so many ways of being seen.

My portrait selected for the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize is of Molly and Amber Photographed at Woody’s Girls’ Skate Night in Blackpool as part of my on going project ‘Skate Like a Lass’.

An Archive is a new exhibition of photography and painting by award-winning artist Juliet Klottrup, created during her residency at Windermere Jetty Museum. Based in the North West, Klottrup explores connections between people, place, and heritage through storytelling and the documentation of social and environmental narratives.
The work is inspired by the museum’s collection, shoreline, and community, reflecting its unique blend of maritime heritage, ecology, and boat conservation. Where medium format photographs end, paintings begin, with colours drawn from the archive—boat details, natural wood grain, and faded flags. Rooted in her lifelong connection to the lake, the project continues her commitment to documenting Cumbria.

SKATE LIKE A LASS

Incredibly excited to share that my portrait of Molly and Amber from 'Skate Like a Lass' is nominated for The 2025 Taylor Wessing UK Photo Portrait Prize and will be on display at National Portrait Gallery.

I first met Molly and Amber at a Girls’ Skate Night in Blackpool, where we shared cameras so they could self-shoot their skating experience while I captured their portraits. Alongside other local skaters, we built and co-authored an archive aimed at addressing the gaps in representation, participation and historical documentation of skateboarding in the North of England. These collaborations evolved into Skate Like a Lass—a project combining a short film, photo series, zine and two exhibitions in Preston and Blackpool.

As Molly said about other girls those who skate: ‘Be proud of yourself because you were big, brave and strong.’

The exhibition will be open from 13th November 2025 - 8th February 2026.

Huge thank you to the 2025 judges panel comprised photographer and educator Sunil Gupta; art historian, curator and writer Katy Hessel; Senior Curator, Photography at the National Portrait Gallery Sabina Jaskot-Gill; and photographer Tim Walker.

Thank you to Skateboard GB so much for selecting my image of Molly and Amber in Blackpool as a 'British Skate Culture' winner of the first ever UK Skateboard Photography Awards with Samsung Electronics. Proud to have been documenting the female skate scene in the North West over the years. The image selected was from my series 'Skate like a lass'! 🛹 🩷

The were judges Leo Sharp, Garry Jones and Mike Edwards who had the incredibly difficult job of deciding onwinners from the 260+ entries which they received.

A huge thanks to Samsung Electronics for supporting the awards and supporting skateboarding.

Interview with Museum of Youth Culture
"I feel like I'm an archivist, definitely. And a lot of my social documentary work is always thinking about how these images will outlive us all. So how can I best represent you, the person I'm photographing, and how do you want to be seen?"

Grounded in the question of how images live on, photographer and filmmaker @julietklottrup documents rural communities in the North West whose stories often remain undocumented. Her most recent project Skate Like a Lass platforms the collectives providing a safe space for young female skaters to hone their craft. We sat down with her to talk about what drives her work.

- heading to LA! #SFFA205 Shortlist featured in Variety

About the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2025:
This major program for filmmakers worldwide opens doors to new opportunities and connections, acting as a stepping stone for up-and-coming filmmakers. The shortlist will be flown to Los Angeles at the beginning of June to take part in a four-day workshop program culminating in a red carpet Awards ceremony.

When I first premiered the film to Joe on a laptop in a cosy pub deep in Yorkshire and had his blessing to share it with the world neither of us could have imagined how far it would reach.
The response to his words, the land and heritage has been profound and widespread. I'm deeply grateful to all the talented hands who joined us on this journey.
